Our local library started a book club that is covering true crime books. Each month, we meet at a coffee shop and cover a new book as a group. The discussion and philosophical debates have been so fun and I have thoroughly enjoyed the process thus far. I love that likeminded people get to gather together each month to discuss topics that others may not want to speak with us about. Two thing I love combined: true crime and book! Oh, AND coffee with my sister.

The Stranger Beside Me: The True Crime Story of Ted Bundy
Ann Rule
This was a tough book to read, as I suspect most of them will be. The group consensus was that Ann Rule romanticized Ted Bundy and their friendship. The group felt that her graphic depiction of the crime scenes was necessary in order for the reader to fully understand the depth of depravity – how horrible the crimes were.

If You Tell: A True Story of Murder, Family Secrets, and the Unbreakable Bond of Sisterhood
Gregg Olsen
The group felt that Gregg Olsen did a great job of describing the girls’ stories and experiences. Though the writing felt repetitive at times, Olsen was a great storyteller. The girls were incredibly brave and telling their story has the potential to help others in a similar situation. Information can be gleaned from the girls across a widespread audience, including the police and other parents.
We took one star off because the read was repetitive and Gregg was conservative in his description of the girls experiences. However, we understood that this was not a work of fiction, it was/is their real life. We understood that they may need to be conservative in their descriptions for their own peace of mind.
